Kate Farquharson

Kate Elizabeth Farquharson was born 24 Jume 1887 in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to Joseph Farquharson and Kate Beningfield. She was the eldest of five children. Her siblings were:

  • John Robert Farquharson (1890-1955)
  • Hugh J. Farquharson (1891-1916)
  • Mary Elizabeth “Molly” Farquharson (1893-1949)
  • Douglas Henry Farquharson (1894-1922)

When Kate was seven years old, her father died in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the age of 40. As a child, Kate went to live with the King family as a servant companion to the King children. I am unsure what year she began in this position but she appears on the 1901 England Census living with the family at 138 Piccadilly.

Kate married William Alfred Courtney Heyman in December 1, 1915 in the Thundridge Parish Church in Hertfordshire. They had three children:

  • Peter Basil Melville Heyman (1916-1922)
  • David Francis William Heyman (1919-2004)
  • Elizabeth Frances Heyman Lee Corbally (1922-2005)

Kate died on March 5, 1926, in Canterbury, Kent, England, at the age of 38, when my grandmother was four years old. She is buried in Hoddesdon Cemetery  in Hertfordshire with her husband . The inscription on her headstone reads “In loving memory of our darling Katie, wife of W. Heyman. If love could save thou hadst not died”
